To continue celebrating women in 2025, I want to take a moment to thank the incredible female singers who continue to shape me as an artist and performer. I’ve put together a Spotify playlist featuring some amazing women that I’ve been listening for years and also artists i've recently discovered. However, in this blog I want to pay special tribute to the many Black female singers who have been such iconic voices in popular music. Putting this playlist together has made me realise how much I have to thank Black music for and how it is has inspired so much!
Although this playlist includes allsorts (popular and obscure), Some of my all-time favourites include Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Beyoncé, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, and Whitney Houston, just to name a few. Each of them, masters of their craft, has left an indelible mark on music history, inspiring generations to come.
Ella Fitzgerald defied expectations, breaking free from the stereotypes placed on female singers. She became "one of the boys," matching, and often outshining, some of the biggest performers of her time with her technically flawless, yet adventurous vocal approach
Nina Simone was fearless. Her music was a powerful force for change, highlighting the injustices she faced while standing as a beacon of resilience and strength. Her voice and message continue to inspire me.
Beyoncé constantly evolves, reinventing herself through different genres while exploring the deep roots of Black music and its impact on history.
And then there’s Alicia Keys, the artist who changed everything for me. By blending classical music with hip-hop, she sparked something in 13-year-old me, setting me on the path to where I am today. I love her so much!
These women are just a few who have shaped music, culture, and me as an artist. The playlist includes the artists mentioned and other artists from all over. I just wanted to highlight my favs and say a big thank you! I absolutely love sharing music, so do feel free to respond with your own recommendations, whether international, local, old or young.
